Just because it is sometimes not easy. I want to summerize the steps here.

In my case this wasn't working. I had to add a fastboot -w before flashing the images.

I have been trying to get my 256GB model back to stock ROM to test something out today and found that I am not able with the steps above or the help_stuck_on_boot and fastboot -w
It either goes to BootLoader loop and does not enter recovery mode after adb sideloading the recovery image or I can factory reset and get back to A15.
Any ideas?

I've been trying to flash my 256GB Surface Duo 2 back to stock ROM through the Micro$oft instructions here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/recover-surface-duo-if-it-won-t-start-1e6fb3cf-4e24-92a8-bc05-4984274bc6a4 as well. Flashing the stock ROM with ADB works fine but when I reboot, it tells me to reset the device and ends up rebooting into the DUO-DE setup again...

FYI, when I flashed the DUO-DE ROM, I had to do the steps from #36

./fastboot delete-logical-partition system_ext_a
./fastboot delete-logical-partition system_ext_b
./fastboot delete-logical-partition product_a
./fastboot delete-logical-partition product_b

before flashing the ROM because of the Not enough space to resize partition error.

Any ideas?

This is how I did it. First I deleted absolutely everything on #SurfaceDuo2.

adb reboot fastboot
fastboot delete-logical-partition system_ext
fastboot delete-logical-partition system_ext_a
fastboot delete-logical-partition system_ext_b
fastboot delete-logical-partition product
fastboot delete-logical-partition product_a
fastboot delete-logical-partition product_b

fastboot reboot recovery

From Android Recovery, select Apply update from ADB, and then

adb sideload <filename>

Thanks mate, this is working perfectly to reflash the stock ROM on my Surface Duo 2!

I just went through the steps on one of my Duo2 devices, these have worked before but now on the second device they do not. The device is in a boot loop in boot loader mode.
I did try factory data reset as well to no avail.
adb sideload <recoveryimage.zip> seems to go through without an error though.

Quick update, after reflashing 2 more times I ended up booting into A12

Yes, I had to reflash the recovery image twice as well before it would boot into Android 12L.

last thing to resolve is re-locking the bootloader.

I have the latest platform tools 35.02 from last year.

./fastboot --version
fastboot version 35.0.2-12147458

but when I send the lock command I get

looking at the output of fastboot --help I see the flashing command there though.

locking/unlocking:
 flashing lock|unlock       Lock/unlock partitions for flashing
 flashing lock_critical|unlock_critical
                            Lock/unlock 'critical' bootloader partitions.
 flashing get_unlock_ability
                            Check whether unlocking is allowed (1) or not(0).

In settings in the OS the OEM unlock is off and grayed out, so not sure what is going on there.

Answering my own question here:

Finally, was able to do this with the following steps
NOTE: You will lose all data so backup before doing this.

1. Factory Reset (not sure if absolutely necessary) from Recovery Mode
2. Set up phone with working SIM card (tried without and could not get it to work)
3. Enable Developer Tools
4. Enable USB debugging
5. Run adb reboot bootloader
6. Once on bootloader mode
7. Run fastboot flashing lock
   You should get this

$ fastboot flashing lock
OKAY [  0.028s]
Finished. Total time: 0.030s

8. Follow the steps on the phone screen to lock the boot loader
9. Reboot
10. Set up Device
11. Enable Developer Tools again
12. Turn Off OEM Unlocking Toggle
