  • I am an ELN admin
Inventory : use of Chemotion as database of the Department's stock of commercial reagents

Description

Now the info provided in the samples list are :
nature of the chemical
one single info for each sample of this chemical. the choice for this info is limited to External Name OR short label OR name.

It would be useful to be able to show more data on the line, especially in the context of inventory, for instance about owner or location. Thus the tab layout should not be a toggle but a multiple choice. More fields should be available to choose : location (building, room), Owner, owner team, borrower...
the exact choice of these fields depend on the context of the lab.
In order to keep the interface tidy we propose that up to four fields would be chosen by the ELN administrator, and these four would be available for the individual user in the tab layout panel.

thus the modified interface could look like ::

2: Use case : we use chemotion for inventory of a large database of chemicals available in our department. Often, many flasks are present, in as many locations. In the current version of Chemotion the users need to open the samples one by one, go for inventory tab, and scroll to location to find out if the flask is in the storage next door or in another builiding. Thus providing more informtion in the list of samples would allow a rapid browsing.

Instead of opening a separate issue, I have an additional suggestion with regard to the inventory information list:

Currently, there are three date fields:

  • required date
  • ordered date
  • expiration date

However, two more important pieces of information are missing in my opinion:

  • arrival date (or delivery data)
  • opening date

The arrival data is important since between ordering a chemical and delivery, sometimes there can be a considerable amount of time passed. With the arrival or delivery date combined with ordered date, it would be possible to track all orders and also get statistics on how long vendors take to deliver.

Furthermore, ordering and arrival do not necessarily mean that a chemical is immediately used - therefore "opening date" (of the container) would be another useful information, to check how long an open bottle has been around.

Additional question: has anybody already tried to somehow link the inventory function of Chemotion with the DAMARIS software?

This software is quite common at least in German universities and a smooth integration with custom import/export templates/scripts would be very helpful

Damaris: we had this discussion in the past and again today (with another group): the main question would be if Damaris offers an API - we could not find this info so far

I emailed Damaris via their contact forum to inquire if they provide or plan to provide an API. I will provide more info as soon as I get a reply
