@bouweandela pooch is simply amazing. It's made my life so easy over on geovista. I can't recommend it more highly.

See here.

I use it to download and cache versioned assets, and provision a click CLI so that users can easily download assets, or simply leave geovista to use pooch on the fly at runtime to download the assests as and when they're needed.
