Petsc can provide more information about about errors (like backtraces) than we are currently asking it for. This would be very helpful for debugging.

I think the right approach is to write our own error handler: http://www.mcs.anl.gov/petsc/petsc-current/docs/manualpages/Sys/PetscPushErrorHandler.html
