Increment order id by website instead of store?

I was wondering if anyone knows something about having order increments done by website. If you set the eav_entity_type.increment_per_store=0 the order incrementing becomes sort of a global thing.

I would think more logical would be to limit first to the scope of a website.

The code says that if increment_per_store is set to 0, it will always use 0 as an increment prefix, so it's global and not possible to make it increment per website.

Looking at the table eav_entity_store and the core, it doesn't seem possible to increment by website without custom code.

Yes I had old module for just changing the increment step, I added this there.

Does the code work as you expect?

Yes it basically takes the website from the current order, finds the first store (lowest id) and uses those settings.
Mostly tested this manually, I have some recurrent profiles running on different stores of the same website and they nicely use the same counter.
If I add an order via the admin on a different website, the order number is totally different.

For ordering via admin, if the order number is not what you want, replace your first line with this:

        $storeId = Mage::getSingleton('adminhtml/session_quote')->getStoreId() ?? $this->getStoreId();

Beware, I do not know if the above will work or it is what you want.
