Did we ever figure out a way to automate font distribution on the system (outside py) or is that completely manual?

How about using a conda package?
e.g.: https://anaconda.org/conda-forge/font-ttf-dejavu-sans-mono and https://anaconda.org/conda-forge/fonts-conda-forge

Edit: I'm being fuzzy. I mean there are two problems. Getting fonts onto a system and then getting and using the font in something like mpl. I assume this is about using an existing font on mpl? Sorry for the noob question.
