Main-menu sizing behavior is weird

A broader discussion around this can be found on #1595, but the resume is that the calculations being done to decide wether this menu should be on its simplified version or not, as well as the scale of its content, are weird and causing the menu to be small/simplified on situations were it doesn't need to be.
