What environment variable should I write the account password for using remote OpenSearch to connect to the OS?

That doesn't actually go into an environment variable, but into a curlrc-formatted file. The configuration instructions about authentication talk about the prompt from ./scripts/auth_setup that will help you set those credentials, as does the documentation about remote instances.

I can try playing around with a Kubernetes cluster tomorrow and see if I can make a guess as to why this is happening. I really don't have any ideas right now, this is the first time I've seen this problem. Like I asked in my last comment, how are you starting up the Malcolm deployment on kubernetes and creating the environment variable maps/secrets/etc.? Are you using the Malcolm control scripts or the Helm chart (which is still sort of in beta but getting pretty close) or something else entirely?
