Removal of background drawable causes ambient mode to maintain matrix text

On top of the title, it also causes the green behind the clock text to be amplified, and, quite frankly it's ugly.
My watch is running 6.0.1.

Rolling back to before the push where the drawable was removed, the text vanishes again when in ambient mode and the green shadow is reasonable again.
If I stay on this push and comment out the drawable's draw method, the same issue is achieved.
