Over the past year I've built a few basic storage things:

  1. Shoe Rack: Entrance Shoe Rack #181
  2. Coat Rack: Coat Rack for Cloak Room #195
  3. Library: Library Bookshelf #179 (comment) + Library Book Shelves Part 2  #190
    |> Chore: Organise Library -> Clear Thinking Sanctuary 💭  #216

And a few other smaller storage solutions including the Office/Studio #218 and Workshop: #189

Sadly this doesn't come close to addressing our storage needs. 💭
And as a result of not having enough places to store everything, the house is constantly cluttered. 😖

The clutter really holds us back and we need to address it systematically/permanently.
I'm quite happy to spend a whole month building storage and have this resolved once and for all.
But I cannot do this alone, I simply don't have the "bandwidth" ... I need a lot of help!
I'm desperately trying to build the App (feedback very much welcome: dwyl/mvp#140 🙏),
manage the essential building work outside and plan for the next work that has to be done ... #14
I feel like I'm failing at everything right now because progress is so slow on each area
because my attention/focus is constantly being drawn away for "life" ... 😕

I can do the "manual labor" parts of building storage (measuring, cutting wood & assembling parts) ... 👷‍♂️
but I need lots of help with thinking about what to store where. 💭

Questions

  1. Where? - there are many places in the house that have space for built-in storage. Pick one to start with.
  2. What? - what do you want to store in that first location?
  3. When? - what is the order of storage systems we need to create? e.g. Attic First? or Basement First? 🤷‍♂️
  4. How Much? - what quantity of the items do we want to store, this informs how big the shelves need to be. 📏
  5. Format? - do we want open shelves like the shoe rack / library / diaper storage or closed cupboards?

@iteles this is mostly going to require input from you. 🤞
@Stephanymtr as our de-cluttering crusader you can help too. 🙏

I just want to acknowledge I have seen this.

For me, the key storage location is the attic storage room because that for sure doesn't conflict with any future plans for the house - we can use this as our personal storage in the meantime.

The second key storage location is in the room where our washing machine currently resides as we have a lot of 'spare' kitchen stuff and laundry that we need a place to store and is in the way.

What we probably need to do is an exercise of categorising what we need storage for in the short term in terms of our personal things that can then be repurposed when the whole house is used for business only needs. This will help us understand what we need in terms of storage.

@iteles sounds like we agree on getting something in the Attic storage room ASAP.
want to head up there now and measure what will make sense in terms of shelves?

@iteles given that we didn't get a chance to meet upstairs yesterday, do you want to try and do this today e.g. after lunch?
I've got some basic measurements for the space with the laser, but keen to discuss the format of the storage. Thanks. 🙏

We went up to the attic and agreed that we would use the IKEA SAMLA 704.550.87 transparent storage boxes we already have as the basis for our storage system in the attic:
D5324421-D30A-4B09-A160-1EF843DDA3BA

there are various heights for these boxes:

So I’m thinking of making shelves that accommodate all 3 sizes so we can store bulky things like blankets and winter coats on the bottom, “normal sized” things in the middle and smaller items on the top.

Any objections @iteles?

Going to make the shelves floor to ceiling so we maximise the use of space in the attic.

not working on this today but will have everything prepared so we can head to Leroy Merlin on Monday to buy materials. 🤞🏼

Sounds like a plan 👌🏻 I don't really anticipate needing many large ones because we might just end up with everything in one large in sorted pile - I think the medium size will be most useful so maybe we could plan to have more of these.

Let's see how much fits once we draw out the shelves.
