This folder contains data on Cabinet-level officials who have served in presidential administrations since Jimmy Carter's. It was used in the following FiveThirtyEight articles:

Different presidents have designated different offices to be in their Cabinets. This directory contains data on all offices that have been in the Cabinet at any point since 1977, regardless of whether they were in the Cabinet at the time, with four exceptions:
- Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (in the Cabinet from 1996 to 2001)
- Administrator of the General Services Administration (in the Cabinet from sometime during the Bill Clinton administration to 2001)
- Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (in the Cabinet from 1993 to 2009)
- Director of the Office of Personnel Management (in the Cabinet sometime during the Bill Clinton administration to 2001)
The following offices were only in the Cabinet for part of the time period covered by this data:
- Administrator of the Small Business Administration (1994–2001, 2012–present)
- Ambassador to the United Nations (1977–1989, 1993–2001, 2009–2018, 2021–present)
- Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers (1977–1981, 1987–1989, 1996–2001, 2009–2017, 2021–present)
- Director of central intelligence/director of the Central Intelligence Agency (1981–1987, 1995–2001, 2017–2021)
- Director of national intelligence (2017–present)
- Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (2021–present)
- Secretary of education (position created in 1980)
- Secretary of energy (position created in 1977)
- Secretary of homeland security (position created in 2003)
- Secretary of veterans affairs (position created in 1989)
The data does not include acting Cabinet members. It is up to date as of Feb. 10, 2023.
