ASCII Artifacts That Don't Go Away

Describe the bug
There are ascii artifacts, particularly checkmarks,l littered on the ncurses display when there should be empty space. These artifacts persist in different views, tabs, and between opening and closing the program.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Run program ncspot
2. Wait ~5 seconds
3. See error

Expected behavior
I expect the empty rows to be free of artifacts, but instead there are weird lingering artifacts such as check marks and other ascii characters other than blank.
