Time Crisis (timecrsa) support? #1229

I see timecrsa on the game list and hoped to try it out. I do get the warning "game does not work" in a verbose log, and the actual behavior is a fail of these initial checks on the game's boot screen:

DSP RAM NG C00008H
SUBCPU START WAIT NG

Would it be possible to get Time Crisis to load into the game? At least the initial loading phase doesn't seem to be a Namco System 22-wide issue. I can get Air Combat 22 (airco22b) and Ridge Racer (ridgeraj) to load.

Unfortunately, the corresponding timecris doesn't work in any of the later MAMEs available on RetroPie for pi either:

  • 2010: Freezes completely at the check screen, requiring a reboot from SSH
  • 2015: Actually gets past the check screen but freezes immediately after, requiring a reboot from SSH
  • 2016: Passes the DSP RAM check but fails the SUBCPU START WAIT CHECK. I am able to exit the emulator. Tricks for bypassing this issue on PC do not work on pi
  • .235 ("current" from binary): Same as 2016

Hmm I suspect if it doesn't work that far up the line it might be because of a deeper (missing chuck of emulation) issue. One solution might be to use the PlayStation version of time crisis instead as it's probably much better all around, though I have no idea where their lightgun support is in that core.

Lightgun support is good in lr-pcsx-rearmed (up to 2 players) and lr-duckstation (only 1 player I think). Time Crisis and its PS1-exclusive sequel Project Titan both work very well on the pi hardware, but I will jump at any chance to go for the arcade version when I can avoid the long load times of the PlayStation 😃

it might require a lot of elbow grease since it's running PS1-based hardware.
