mpv 0.40.0 has been released!

We are excited to announce the release of mpv 0.40.0.

So, I've been using HDR in the past by first installing vk-hdr-layer-kwin6-git, then setting mpv to use vo=gpu-next hwdec=auto gpu-api=vulkan gpu-context=vulkan-api target-colorspace-hint

Does this mean that I no longer have to use a Vulkan HDR layer to view HDR content on mpv?

Whenever Mesa 25.1 is released and with mpv 0.40, to get HDR on gpu-next, you would do the following(?):

~ $ mpv --vo=gpu-next --gpu-api=vulkan --gpu-context=waylandvk --hwdec=vulkan "path/to/video"

You still need --target-colorspace-hint. In fact for gpu-next with vulkan, nothing changes on mpv side. Except that layer is integrated into mesa instead of external.

dmabuf-wayland is generally worse (or equivalent to scale=bilinear with gpu/gpu-next). Probably also worse in other ways too, it's meant to be a power efficient VO.

dmabuf-wayland can be considered "passthrough" output. mpv doesn't do any processing, only color conversion if needed, but it should be avoided if possible. The implication is that more processing is done on compositor side, which is likely lower quality that what gpu-next offers. Especially the scaling and tonemapping.

So for now writing to clipboard is only supported on Windows right? as the docs stated. Would love to support mac and linux (wayland and x11 probably) soon. But for now the best approach I think it's just use their os' equivalent clipboard command (wl-copy, xclip, etc.)

the mpv:// protocol is a good idea, but i think the current implementation is flawed.

Putting mpv:// in front will likely result in invalid urls. That can be annoying when using stuff that parses urls.

For a browser extension I worked on we first did the same. Until someone realised that it's better to put the data in the hash. Like mpv://watch#<data>.

no, you can chain hotkey on mpv for some reason i think.
You can even do multiple like t-e-s-t.
But it will NOT work if you have any of the key assign (in that case is t, e, and s)
