Currently the recurrent laryngeal nerve is significantly more complex than seems necessary. Taking a more direct path, it should exhibit greatly improved latency.
This seemed like a good idea many millennia before the initial VCS commit, but over time we've made a lot of incremental changes that ultimately no longer make sense with this path. Such is the burden of agile speciation.
Making matters worse, I think there are probably a lot of proprietary forks which copied this design without much thought.
