it should be possible to use appshell without defining header height

there shouldn't be a need to hardcode the header height. it should be able to be dynamically calculated based on its contents

AppShell elements have fixed position. Height is required to be set to offset those elements with padding. Dynamic values cannot be supported.

wouldn't a flex based layout allow for a dynamic height? it seems like a shell layout without hardcoded dimensions shouldn't be impossible - if it's not worth getting into I understand but probably not impossible?

AppShell is not a flex-based layout, it uses fixed position for elements. If you need a flex-based component, you should not use AppShell – it is not what it was designed to do.
