At the same time, democracy was once a radical experiment to scale the governance of a city-state to many millions of citizens spread across continents. A [quote](https://www.monticello.org/research-education/thomas-jefferson-encyclopedia/quotations-jefferson-memorial/) on the wall of the memorial in Washington, D.C. to United States Founding Father Thomas Jefferson reads "(L)aws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind... We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors." Yet today democracy has become a synonym in much of the world for the increasingly desperate effort to preserve rigid, outmoded, polarized, paralyzed, and increasingly illegitimate governments. We should not be shocked, therefore, at the disdain that so many technologists have for democratic participation, viewing it as an impediment to progress, nor should we be surprised by the fear among so many advocates of democracy that technical advance will result in the dominance of authoritarian adversaries or internal collapse.
Hi!
Noticed that the English translation is missing in the Mandarin version. I assumed the English translation is indeed just duly translated from the original Mandarin, but either
the quote was added as part of the translation
the quote existed in the Mandarin version, but since, has been removed
Any insight on what happened there?
I think a comma would help with readability as found in other quotations of that quote: "a boy, as civilized"
Thanks!
The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:
Initially, some chapters are translated from Mandarin to English, while others are translated from English.
Chapter 2 started in English, and translated into Mandarin for publishing. The quote was added to the English version after the primary translation.
Currently, the Mandarin content on the website will align with the Mandarin version published this July (which is also under CC0).
As the English version gets updates and revisions for the next edition, we will look for updating Mandarin translations after the next edition is completed on the English side.
