the IRC text protocol is quite simple. large groups are not obviously replicated by talek logs, but smaller groups could be handled reasonably efficiently.

IRC also has the benefit of having many corpuses of chat logs which can be replayed to understand the performance characteristics needed to successfully implement the protocol.
