Hi Mrugesh.

Thanks for giving this opportunity to interact with you. You are an inspiration for me. I recently shifted my career to software development. Currently I am a full stack developer(MERN). I am looking for job and internships but right now the market isn't hiring beginners/freshers.

So, my question is what can i do during such times that can raise my profile? Should i start working on open source projects or improve my DSA or work on a project of my own?

You're correct that the job market can be challenging for beginners, especially in these uncertain times. However, remember that every great developer started where you are right now. It's a journey; the most important part is learning and growing.

The options you've mentioned are all great ways to boost your profile. Here's my take on them:

1. Open Source Contributions can be an excellent way to gain practical experience. Not only will you learn from experienced developers, but you'll also be able to showcase your skills to a larger audience. You should research and apply to programs like Google Summer of Code and Mozilla Outreachy.

2. If you are interested in improving your programming skills, you should try out https://exercism.org

3. Building a portfolio of projects that showcase your skills. These projects do not have to be elaborate but convey your key skills in the MERN stack. Usually, "Clone of X" style apps are a good place. For example, creating a simple Twitter clone, hacker news clone, etc. Host your code on GitHub, and ensure your README file clearly explains the project and how to use it. Include these in your resume.

4. Networking: Often overlooked, networking can be a very effective tool. Join local programming meetups (or online ones), engage in developer communities, and don't hesitate to reach out to people in the industry. This can open up opportunities you might not find on traditional job platforms.

Remember, the aim is not to do all of these at once. Choose what fits you best and aligns with your career goals. It's okay to take your time and explore.
