In essence, using state values creates a subscription to the event of its change?
Does this unsubscribe happen and at what point?

There is no subscription event, another approach is used. You can google article about signals.

It happens when the reactive context is destroyed. The reactive context is available in:

1. <script> block;
2. expressions in the markup;
3. $effect;
4. $effect.root.

The first two are obviously destroyed together with the component. $effect - at effect re-run and destroying the effect's parent reactive context. $effect.root - when the cleanup function called.
