Mitigation Strategies Analysis for jamesnk/newtonsoft.json

  • Description:

    1. Review Code: Search the codebase for instances where TypeNameHandling is explicitly set to TypeNameHandling.All or TypeNameHandling.Auto within JsonSerializerSettings configurations used with Newtonsoft.Json.
    2. Change to TypeNameHandling.None (Recommended): If the application does not rely on Newtonsoft.Json's automatic type handling during deserialization, change the TypeNameHandling setting to TypeNameHandling.None. This disables the problematic feature and is the most secure approach.
    3. Change to TypeNameHandling.Objects or TypeNameHandling.Arrays (If Absolutely Necessary): If type handling is genuinely required for specific deserialization scenarios using Newtonsoft.Json, consider switching to TypeNameHandling.Objects or TypeNameHandling.Arrays. Understand that these options still carry risk and necessitate further mitigation (see "Implement a Custom SerializationBinder").
    4. Test Thoroughly with Newtonsoft.Json: After modifying the TypeNameHandling setting in your Newtonsoft.Json configurations, rigorously test all deserialization processes that utilize these settings to confirm continued functionality and identify any regressions introduced by the change in type handling behavior within Newtonsoft.Json.
