Mitigation Strategy: Enforce Auto-Escaping and Context-Aware Escaping

  • Description:
    1. Verify Auto-Escaping is Enabled: Confirm that Chameleon's auto-escaping feature is enabled in the application's configuration. Check the Chameleon initialization code and settings.
    2. Understand Default Escaping Rules: Thoroughly understand Chameleon's default escaping mechanisms for different contexts (HTML, XML, JavaScript, CSS). Refer to the Chameleon documentation for details.
    3. Context-Specific Escaping Directives: Utilize Chameleon's context-specific escaping directives (e.g., structure, string, xml, js) explicitly in templates where necessary to ensure correct escaping for the intended output context.
    4. Template Code Review for Escaping: During template code reviews, specifically verify that escaping is correctly applied to all dynamic content based on its output context.
    5. Testing with Different Contexts: Test templates with various types of data and in different output contexts (e.g., HTML attributes, JavaScript strings) to ensure that escaping is effective in preventing XSS.
