Mitigation Strategies Analysis for joomla/joomla-cms

Mitigation Strategy: Keep Joomla Core Updated

  • Description:
    1. Regularly check for Joomla core updates on the official Joomla website (joomla.org) or within the Joomla administrator dashboard.
    2. Before applying updates to the production site, create a full backup of the website (files and database).
    3. Test the update in a staging environment (if available) to ensure compatibility with extensions and templates and identify potential issues.
    4. Apply the update through the Joomla administrator dashboard (Extensions -> Manage -> Update) or by manually uploading update packages if necessary.
    5. After updating, thoroughly test the website's frontend and backend functionalities to confirm everything is working as expected and no regressions were introduced.
    6. Monitor Joomla release channels (e.g., Joomla Security Strike Team announcements) for future updates and security announcements.
  • List of Threats Mitigated:
    • Exploitation of known Joomla core vulnerabilities (High Severity) - Attackers can exploit publicly disclosed vulnerabilities in older Joomla versions to gain unauthorized access, execute code, or cause denial of service.
    • Remote Code Execution (RCE) through core vulnerabilities (Critical Severity) - Unpatched vulnerabilities can allow attackers to execute arbitrary code on the server, leading to complete system compromise.
    • Data breaches due to unpatched vulnerabilities (High Severity) - Vulnerabilities can be exploited to access sensitive data stored in the Joomla database or files.
  • Impact:

  • Currently Implemented: Yes, automated Joomla update notifications are enabled in the administrator dashboard.
  • Missing Implementation: Staging environment for testing updates before production deployment is not yet fully established. Automated update application process is not in place.
  • Description:
    1. Install a reputable 2FA extension from the Joomla Extensions Directory (JED). Popular options include Google Authenticator, Authy, or WebAuthn based extensions.
    2. Configure the chosen 2FA extension within Joomla's backend.
    3. Enable 2FA for all administrator and super administrator accounts within Joomla's user management.
    4. Instruct administrators to configure their 2FA methods (e.g., install authenticator app on their phones and link it to their Joomla account).
    5. Test the 2FA login process through Joomla's administrator login page to ensure it is working correctly.

    2. Rename the /administrator directory to a less predictable name (e.g., /backend-login, /secure-admin, /cms-control). This is a Joomla specific directory.
    3. Update any relevant web server configurations (e.g., Apache or Nginx virtual host files) if necessary to reflect the directory rename, ensuring Joomla can still access the renamed directory.
    4. Inform Joomla administrators about the new administrator login URL.
    5. Test accessing the administrator login page using the new URL to confirm the change is successful within the Joomla environment.

  • Description:

    2. Verify file permissions for Joomla's configuration.php file. This file should be readable only by the web server user and not publicly accessible. Permissions should typically be set to 644 or 640.
    3. In the web server configuration (e.g., Apache or Nginx virtual host files), explicitly deny direct access to Joomla's configuration.php file using directives like <Files> or location blocks.
    4. Test accessing configuration.php directly via a web browser to ensure it results in a "Forbidden" or "Not Found" error, confirming Joomla's configuration file is protected.

Mitigation Strategy: Regularly Update Extensions

  • Description:
    1. Regularly check for Joomla extension updates within the Joomla administrator dashboard (Extensions -> Manage -> Update).
    2. Subscribe to newsletters or follow social media accounts of installed Joomla extension developers to be informed about updates and security releases.
    3. Before applying updates, back up the Joomla website (files and database).
    4. Test updates in a staging environment if possible, ensuring compatibility with the Joomla core and other extensions.
    5. Apply updates through the Joomla administrator dashboard.
    6. After updating, test the Joomla website's functionality to ensure compatibility and no regressions.

Mitigation Strategy: Choose Extensions Carefully

  • Description:

    2. Prefer extensions listed in the official Joomla Extensions Directory (JED) as they undergo a basic review process by the Joomla community.
    3. Check JED ratings and reviews for the Joomla extension to gauge user satisfaction and identify potential issues reported by other Joomla users.
    4. Look for Joomla extensions that are actively maintained and regularly updated by their developers. Check the last update date on JED or the developer's site.

Mitigation Strategy: Remove Unused Extensions
