Mitigation Strategy: Disable Formula Calculation

  • Description:

    1. Locate the code where the PhpSpreadsheet object is instantiated (e.g., $spreadsheet = new Spreadsheet(); or $spreadsheet = IOFactory::load($filename);).
    2. Immediately after instantiation or loading, add the following lines:
      $spreadsheet->getCalculationEngine()->setCalculationCacheEnabled(false);
      $spreadsheet->getCalculationEngine()->setCalculationsEnabled(false);
    3. Ensure these lines are executed before any other operations that might trigger formula calculation.
    4. Thoroughly test the application to confirm that formulas are not being evaluated. Upload spreadsheets with known formulas and verify that the results are not calculated.
  • Threats Mitigated:

    • Remote Code Execution (RCE) via Malicious Formulas (Severity: Critical): Attackers could craft formulas that use spreadsheet functions (if available) or exploit vulnerabilities in the calculation engine to execute arbitrary code on the server.
    • Information Disclosure via Formulas (Severity: High): Formulas could be used to access sensitive data within the spreadsheet or potentially from external sources (if external data access were somehow enabled).
    • Denial of Service (DoS) via Complex Formulas (Severity: Medium): Extremely complex or recursive formulas could consume excessive CPU and memory, leading to a denial of service.
  • Impact:

    • RCE: Risk reduced from Critical to Negligible (if formulas are truly disabled).
    • Information Disclosure: Risk significantly reduced, depending on the source of the information. If the information is only accessible via formulas, the risk is negligible.

  • Description: (This strategy is difficult to implement solely within PhpSpreadsheet, as it lacks fine-grained controls. The primary mitigation here is still sandboxing, which is external to PhpSpreadsheet. However, we can focus on what can be done within the library's context.)

    1. Custom Calculation Engine (Last Resort, Extremely Complex, PhpSpreadsheet-Specific):
      • This is the only way to truly control formula behavior within PhpSpreadsheet.
      • Implement a custom calculation engine for PhpSpreadsheet that only supports a very limited set of functions, explicitly excluding any functions that could access external data (e.g., WEBSERVICE, IMPORTXML, and any functions that might interact with the file system or network).
      • This requires deep understanding of PhpSpreadsheet's internals and formula parsing. It's a significant development effort and should only be considered if absolutely necessary. You would need to extend PhpOffice\PhpSpreadsheet\Calculation\Calculation and override relevant methods.
    2. Formula Auditing (Limited, PhpSpreadsheet-Specific):

  • Missing Implementation: Example: "No comprehensive formula auditing or custom calculation engine. The current auditing only checks for a few obvious keywords."

  • Description:

    1. When extracting data from cells that might contain hyperlinks, use PhpSpreadsheet's API to get the value and the hyperlink separately.
    2. Do not directly use the hyperlink object's getUrl() method in an HTML <a> tag.
    3. Instead, get URL using $cell->getHyperlink()->getUrl() and store it as a string.
    4. Process this string as described in previous answer (display as plain text or use proxy).

    • Phishing/Malware/XSS: Risk remains high unless the extracted URL is handled safely (plain text or proxy). PhpSpreadsheet itself doesn't mitigate these; it just provides the data.
  • Currently Implemented: Example: "Hyperlink extraction using $cell->getHyperlink()->getUrl() implemented in app/Services/SpreadsheetPresenter.php, line 42. However, the extracted URL is not sanitized (passed directly to the view)."

  • Missing Implementation: Example: "The extracted URL is not sanitized before being displayed. Needs to be updated to display as plain text or use a link proxy."

  • Missing Implementation: Example: "Need to change the logic to reject files with macros instead of just logging a warning."
