Better Logging/debugging

Ale drivers tend to have complex execution paths which can be hard to debug for those not intimately aware of the class structure. Probably worth logging and catching common errors with a straightforward interpretation of the issue. We might need a novel approach, so we don't duplicate logging in overwritten methods.
