Note: making sense of ieee formatting and parsing hex floats completely confused me, don't trust compute_hex to do what it should. I ripped the internals of the other compute function and somewhat edited it until the results for a few hex floats worked.

Forgot that went unused, could remove that.

It is possible to process 4 words at once.

Consider using...

// returns a value with the high 16 bits set if not valid
// otherwise returns the conversion of the 4 hex digits at src into the bottom
// 16 bits of the 32-bit return register
//
// see
// https://lemire.me/blog/2019/04/17/parsing-short-hexadecimal-strings-efficiently/
static inline uint32_t hex_to_u32_nocheck(
    const uint8_t *src) { // strictly speaking, static inline is a C-ism
  uint32_t v1 = internal::digit_to_val32[630 + src[0]];
  uint32_t v2 = internal::digit_to_val32[420 + src[1]];
  uint32_t v3 = internal::digit_to_val32[210 + src[2]];
  uint32_t v4 = internal::digit_to_val32[0 + src[3]];
  return v1 | v2 | v3 | v4;
}

where...

const uint32_t digit_to_val32[886] = {

I had a quick look and it looks good. Of course, we would like to have serious unit tests.

Yeah I didn't get the unit tests running on my end, only concerning bit for me is the compute_hex function. Wasn't clear at least from the microsoft docs on the ieee standard when the exponent is lower than the minimum possible, I'd assume the output's supposed to close into 0? I think I messed that up. It seems like in msvc the ide will complain outright if the hex float's exponent is outside the specified number of bits.

@Andersama I also do not know how to handle error conditions or out-of-scope values... but we can figure that out.

I think currently the compute_hex_float might be bugged because I have extremely small exponents turn into inf which I suspect is wrong.

The upper bit is always 1 here, no?

/!\ We can have subnormal round to even for hex floats!!

For instance: 0x8000000000000000p-213 vs 0x8000000000000001p-213

You probable want to add a fast path if the mantissa can be represented correctly that uses ldexp

This is true for decimal floats, but definitively not true for hex floats.

@lemire if times allow, I'll port the D code I wrote to do that. In the meantime, I'll put it there fore reference: https://github.com/snazzy-d/sdc/blob/877b095128a50a3f60376e55774668cabbece76a/src/source/packedfloat.d#L215-L311
