Improved robustness

As version 0.1.0 started out as a proof of concept there was a heavy load of logic implemented in the makefile.

This has changed with this release in the way, that the makefile still serves as a central point for configuration, but the work is done by Python scripts invoked by the makefile.

There is still a lot more room for improvement, but hopefully this gets along the right way.
