Implementation Notes

  • Does a corporation always have to run the optimal route?
    • No. You are allowed to run a suboptimal route. This is commonly done to claim connection bonuses.

The rules are actively being revised. There are a few new rules to address edge cases in the game that have been implemented at 18xx.games and will soon be added to the revised rule book.

  • Springfield is considered one hex.
  • The Albany Stagecoach token is lost if not placed before the first 12H is purchased.
  • Minors are not required to own a train.
  • Corporations must buy the cheapest train available during Emergency Money Raising if they take a loan or the president contributes cash; however, if they only issue shares, then they can buy any available train.
  • What changes were made in the second edition?

    • D&H private value increased from $150 to $170
    • NYNH renamed to NH to minimize confusion with NY&H
    • B&A and NH tokens increased from 3 to 4
    • NYC hex costs an additional $40 to token
    • Brooklyn moved one hex east and Staten Island (and additional connection token) added to where Brooklyn used to be
    • Toronto revenue increased, is now a pass through city, and considered one hex
    • Long Island and Williamsport revenue decreased
    • Two Brown K city tiles that must be placed on hexes where only K city upgrades are possible
    • 5DE replaced by 4DE
    • 5DE is now available alongside D for $1000
    • DE trains only score tokened cities and offboard locations
    • D earns +100 per offboard in its route
  • Immediate Capitalization Optional Rule

    • Capitalization Round happens at the end of the OR
    • Corporations who have floated, but not yet operated, immediately receive full capitalization (obeying market share rules)

2nd Edition Discussion

  • Loans are automatically taken to lay/upgrade track. Loans are manually taken during Emergency Money Raising.
  • A corporation may not use Emergency Money Raising if it salvages its last train during its turn. Doing so can lead to a situation where the corporation cannot purchase a train nor leave the train buying step. Use the Undo button to cancel the salvage action.
  • The X11 and X22 tiles for New York City must be placed in the orientation seen on the Tiles page. The X11 tile will have NW and NE exits. The X22 tile will have W, NW, NE, and E exits.
  • Coal tokens are automatically claimed after the Place a token step.
  • Select the Stagecoach token in the Albany hex to replace it with one of the corporation's available tokens.
  • A corporation floated after the Capitalization Round will receive full capitalization after the 6th share is purchased, provided the corporation has not yet operated. This means that during the 12H phase, a corporation can float at 50% and receive partial capitalization. If a 6th share is then purchased, the corporation will become fully capitalized and the remaining shares will be put in the market.
  • The 5DE train will always run the best 5 stops. There is currently no mechanism to run a lesser stop to pick-up a connection bonus.
